Quick answer
- You do not apply to FEMA yourself. FEMA says homeowners do not apply directly for safe room money.
- FEMA gives grant money to the state. The state gives it to local governments.
- Money may be open only after a big disaster, or only in some years.
- FEMA can pay up to 75% of a project's cost. The state or town pays the rest.
Who to call
- Your State Hazard Mitigation Officer can tell you what money is open. Find yours on the FEMA contact list.
- FEMA grant helpline: (866) 222-3580.
- Also ask your county emergency management office.
Alabama also has a tax credit
Alabama has a separate state tax credit. See the steps, one by one.
Other help FEMA lists
- FHA loans: FEMA says a wind shelter can be part of an FHA 203(k) rehab loan or an FHA 203(b) new home loan. The shelter must follow FEMA P-320.
- Mobile home parks: a town may use HUD block grant money for a shelter in a park with at least 20 homes. Rules apply.
Watch out: be careful if a company says you are "approved" for free FEMA money. FEMA says homeowners do not apply directly. Call the state office to check.
